Retail Cybersecurity
Expertise for Your Team
Protect customer accounts, checkout pages, store networks, and payment operations. Keep access to tills, back offices, loyalty value, and gift cards aligned with the people who should have it, and prepare trading for disruption with practical security engineering and clear accountability.
A retail business connects more than a shop floor.
Online checkout, tills and payment terminals, order and warehouse systems, loyalty and gift-card value, supplier connections, franchise partners, and an outsourced helpdesk may all depend on different platforms, scripts, and people. Seasonal staff join and leave, new apps are installed on the storefront, and the busiest trading days are the ones everyone can predict.
Nestack helps your team understand the exposures within those connections and turn findings into manageable improvements. Start with one storefront, store estate, access process, payment workflow, or recovery concern, or discuss a dedicated engineer who works alongside your existing IT, payments, and operations teams.
Three ways to work with Nestack
- 01
Scoped security assessment
Examine a defined storefront, store environment, workflow, or integration and receive prioritised findings, evidence, and recommended next steps.
- 02
Dedicated security engineer
Add engineering capacity with an agreed skill profile, working schedule, reporting line, and backlog.
- 03
Ongoing security improvement
Coordinate approved changes, access reviews, retesting, exercises, and updates to security evidence.
Technical security supports your organisation's payment-card, privacy, and fraud-management processes. Your payments, compliance, and operations leaders retain those decisions, together with your acquirer and payment providers.
02Who we help
Security support for different retail businesses
Scope reflects your channels, estate, platforms, operating model, and responsibilities. A fashion brand selling online, a supermarket group, a franchised convenience network, and a commerce platform need different controls and delivery arrangements.

Connect security with the right decision owners
Agree who owns each decision at the start: fraud rules, refund and chargeback policy, pricing, and self-assessment scope remain with your authorised teams and acquirer.
03Retail security risk assessment
Connect security priorities to the channels and stores you must protect
An assessment should explain how a weakness could affect cardholder data, customer accounts, trading, or essential operations.
We review selected systems, dependencies, and workflows to create an actionable improvement plan with your team.
What we cover
- 01
Systems and ownership
Storefront, point of sale (POS), order management, warehouse, loyalty, gift-card and collaboration platforms, and their critical dependencies.
- 02
Information flows
How cardholder, customer, loyalty, employee and supplier information is collected, shared, exported and retained.
- 03
Payment and value paths
How card payments, refunds, gift-card activation, loyalty redemption and supplier payments are instructed, approved and monitored.
- 04
Access and exposure
Privileged accounts, helpdesk processes, store and franchise connections, unsupported systems and security configurations.
- 05
Trading priorities
The systems and people needed for store trading, online orders, fulfilment, customer service and peak periods.
- 06
Improvement planning
Findings ranked by likely impact and exposure, with owners and a remediation sequence around the trading calendar.
01Helpdesk resets multi-factor sign-in on a caller's word
Possible consequence:Privileged account handed to an impersonator
Proposed action:Introduce identity checks for privileged resets
Completion evidence:Procedure and test-call records
Owner to agree:IT + helpdesk provider
02Unreviewed third-party script on checkout page
Possible consequence:Card details captured in customers' browsers
Proposed action:Inventory, authorise, and integrity-check scripts
Completion evidence:Script register and monitoring evidence
Owner to agree:E-commerce + security
03Loyalty sign-in has no rate limit on the mobile interface
Possible consequence:Accounts taken over and points drained
Proposed action:Add bot and velocity controls with step-up checks
Completion evidence:Retest and alert evidence
Owner to agree:Platform owner
04Store back office shares a network with payment terminals
Possible consequence:Malware reaches terminals from an infected PC
Proposed action:Separate payment segment with agreed boundaries
Completion evidence:Configuration and reachability test
Owner to agree:Store IT + network
05Service assistant can issue refunds without approval
Possible consequence:Refunds triggered by injected instructions
Proposed action:Gate value-moving actions behind human approval
Completion evidence:Policy test cases and logs
Owner to agree:AI owner + payments
These are fictional examples showing how findings could be presented, not incidents or results from Nestack customers.
04Storefront, checkout, and API security
Check that customer records, orders, and value stay within their intended boundaries
Storefronts, checkout pages, customer accounts and the apps and scripts behind them connect shoppers, staff, payment providers, marketplaces and partners. We test selected controls and integrations for places users, bots or third-party code could reach information or functions outside their role.
05Identity, store-staff, and helpdesk access security
Keep access aligned with each person's role and location
Seasonal staff arrive and leave, store managers share till logins, override cards move between shifts, franchisees connect from their own networks, and an outsourced helpdesk resets passwords for thousands of people. We help manage these changes without slowing down the shop floor.
06Cloud, store-network, and payment-terminal security
Strengthen the environments behind stores and online trading
07Email, gift-card, and payment-change controls
Make trusted communication and stored value harder to misuse
Supplier bank-detail changes, payroll updates, gift-card issuance, promotion codes, and messages to store staff and franchisees create opportunities for impersonation and abuse. We help strengthen technical protections and the verification processes used for any change to where money or value goes.
Domain authentication does not stop all lookalike domains, messages to personal devices, or misuse of a genuinely compromised account, so independent verification matters as much as email configuration.
What we cover
08Ransomware readiness and trading continuity
Prepare to restore the services your stores and customers need first
09Customer, cardholder, and supplier data assurance
Understand who can access sensitive information and why
Retail records can include cardholder data and tokens, customer profiles and purchase history, loyalty and gift-card value, employee and franchisee information, camera footage and supplier pricing. We examine the controls around them and the suppliers and scripts that handle them.
- 01Information inventoryData categories, locations, owners, sharing paths and processors across storefront, store, loyalty and payment platforms.
- 02Cardholder-data scopeWhere card data and tokens flow, which systems connect to them and which assessment route your acquirer expects.
- 03Sensitive-record accessPermissions around customer profiles, stored payment methods, loyalty balances, employee records and camera data.
- 04Retention and exitApproved retention, deletion, exports and contract exit, including copies held by agencies and former platforms.
- 05Platform, processor, and script evidenceSecurity documentation, payment-provider attestations, sub-processors and the justification for every page script.
- 06Assurance supportAn evidence register and technical input to privacy reviews and acquirer and marketplace questionnaires.
10 · AI shopping assistant, pricing, and agentic commerce security
Keep retail AI within its approved access and actions
AI tools may answer customer questions, look up orders, process returns, generate product content, set prices, or let third-party shopping agents buy on a customer's behalf. We assess selected workflows to identify unnecessary data exposure and actions that should require an authorised person or a deterministic policy check.
Technical testing does not establish that automated pricing is lawful or fair, that recommendations are accurate, or that harmful outputs are completely prevented.

Across the retail calendar
Security priorities across the retail calendar
Build checks into the moments when access and risk change. Each stage links to the service on this page that addresses it.
References reviewed October 2026Priorities for assessment, not legal advice. Which payment-card self-assessment applies is agreed with your acquirer, and whether privacy or consumer-protection rules apply depends on your markets, channels and customers, confirmed with your advisers.
11Hire a dedicated retail cybersecurity engineer
Hire a Dedicated Cybersecurity Engineer
Give agreed security work a named owner who investigates selected exposures, coordinates remediation, maintains evidence and keeps your team informed. Define the role around your channels, store estate, platforms and priorities, with specialist support where required.
01What the engineer can own
- An agreed risk and remediation backlog
- Access reviews across storefronts and stores
- Hardening, retests and the script register
- Verification and recovery exercises
02How they work with you
- IT, e-commerce, stores, payments and fraud
- Named accounts and least-privilege access
- Agreed change windows and peak freezes
- Defined coverage hours and handover
03How you see progress
- A prioritised plan with accountable owners
- Status on completed work and open exposure
- Evidence of changes and verification
- Priorities reviewed as the calendar changes
A dedicated engineer does not replace your leadership, payments or fraud team, acquirer, qualified assessor, platform vendors or a staffed security operations centre. Incident response and monitoring need separate coverage.

The proposed service covers multi-store and omnichannel retailers, e-commerce and direct-to-consumer brands, grocery and franchise networks, and retail technology providers. The scope and engineering profile depend on the environment and the work required.
Yes. A defined checkout, store-network, helpdesk, gift-card, recovery, or AI review provides a practical starting point. Agree systems, responsibilities, permissions, and deliverables before work begins.
Discuss a role with an agreed skill profile, working schedule, reporting line, and backlog. Confirm availability and specialist escalation during scoping rather than assuming every security function sits with one person.
The service can complement internal IT, managed providers, outsourced helpdesks, and platform vendors. Establish who administers systems, approves changes, handles alerts, restores services, and contacts vendors so responsibilities are clear.
We first confirm the product, hosting model, licences, available controls, and provider permissions. Customer configuration, custom code, integration testing, and a vendor's underlying shared platform are different scopes.
An agreed review can inventory every script and tag loaded into payment pages, confirm authorisation and integrity controls, and check that unauthorised changes would be detected. Which self-assessment applies to your business is decided with your acquirer; we provide the technical evidence.
No. We support scoped technical controls, cardholder-data scope mapping, and evidence that feeds your own assessment against the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard. Attestations of compliance are produced through your acquirer's process and, where required, a qualified assessor.
Use agreed test windows, non-production storefronts, synthetic accounts, payment test modes, and stop conditions wherever possible. Live terminals, peak trading periods, real transactions, and customer communications are excluded from ordinary testing unless separately scoped and expressly authorised.
Selected store networks, device configurations, inspection routines, and vendor access can be reviewed. Active testing of terminals, self-checkout, refrigeration, and safety systems is excluded, and physical inspection or vendor coordination may need separate arrangements. Franchisee-owned equipment needs the owner's authorisation.
Not automatically. Define alert coverage, response expectations, out-of-hours support, and specialist incident-response arrangements in the engagement scope.
Many activities can begin with configuration evidence, synthetic test records, payment test modes, and limited or redacted exports. Production access should be justified, approved, and restricted to what the agreed task requires. Engagements are designed to avoid cardholder-data access wherever possible.
Agree named personnel, authorised access locations, customer environments, permissions, logging, and data-handling rules with your team. Keeping data in your cloud does not alone resolve cross-border access requirements. Local and onsite work needs a separate arrangement.
No such blanket certification is part of this offer. We support scoped technical controls and evidence. Which rules apply depends on your markets, channels, and customers; your responsible advisers determine the legal requirements and any formal assessment route.
Security controls can protect sign-in, checkout, gift-card, and refund workflows from abuse, but fraud thresholds, chargeback policy, refund rules, and loss-prevention programmes remain with your organisation, its acquirer, and its payment providers. Employee monitoring is not part of this offer.
An agreed technical review can examine connected data, permissions, retrieval boundaries, untrusted instructions, and the actions available to assistants and external shopping agents. Pricing fairness, recommendation accuracy, and consumer-law questions require separate evaluations.
We can examine available technical evidence, data flows, access, supplier dependencies, and unresolved risks. We cannot guarantee an external vendor's controls or replace your procurement, privacy, and legal decisions.
Agreed outputs may include prioritised findings, owner-assigned actions, change records, retest results, exercise reports, and concise progress summaries. Define both the technical evidence and management reporting at the start.
They depend on the systems, store estate, permissions, testing depth, coverage, and specialist needs. Agree milestones after scoping and account for peak-season freezes, store openings, vendor response times, and access dependencies.
Share your organisation type, approximate channels and estate, principal concern, and preferred engagement. Do not send cardholder data, customer records, gift-card numbers, passwords, network details, or live incident evidence through the public enquiry form.
