Robotics Engineering for Chemicals & Materials

Start with the material, not the robot.

Scroll

Tell us the material, the step and how it is done today; no formulations or safety data sheets are needed for a first call.

Automate one bench or plant-support task your materials make awkward: dosing a powder to a target mass, preparing vials, feeding specimens to a test machine you own, tipping containers with less strain, or mounting sensors on a reading round. Nestack engineers the fixture, controls and data record, trials it with inert materials in an area your site confirms is unclassified, and reports what worked, jammed, spilled or still needed a technician.

Who this page is for

What are you working on?

Where this page stops: biological samples, microplates and cell work sit with Biotechnology; hospital and clinical laboratories with Healthcare; GMP dispensing, cleanrooms and batch release with Pharmaceuticals; production cells and lines with Manufacturing; an instrument developed as a product for sale with Product Manufacturing, or Medical Devices if regulated; mine-site minerals with Mining.

Discuss a project for formulation and analytical laboratories

Four decisions, four owners

Did the aid do its bounded job? Is the area unclassified? Is the sample or result acceptable? Does full cost beat today's method?

Arm movement is rarely the hard part. Powders bridge, cling through static or take up moisture; liquids splash or evaporate; specimens and containers vary. A trial informs a decision only when materials, quantities, containers and room conditions are written down first; anything else is untested.

Engineering acceptance
Did the fixture, cell or aid do its bounded job with the listed materials? Technical owners on both sides.
Area and hazard approval
Is the area unclassified, are the materials permitted and does the change fit site permits? Client EHS.
Chemistry or test validity
Is the sample, synthesis or test result acceptable? Client chemists or laboratory quality owner.
Commercial decision
Does full cost beat the current method at real volumes? Laboratory or plant manager.

Classified areas, process control and safety systems, reactive or energetic chemistry, confined spaces and bulk transfer are separately qualified work.

Illustrative scopes

Four bounded tasks, each tested with stand-in materials

Each scope starts with inert or stand-in materials. These are illustrative scopes, not completed client engagements.

A of D
Illustrative scope

Powder weighing and vial preparation cell

Your challenge
Hours spent weighing powders into vials, with variable results on poorly flowing or static-prone materials.
Possible scope
Compare a commercial doser, an adapted doser with vial loading and a custom cell around your balance; prototype the chosen route with named inert powders in an enclosure you approve.
You receive
Options note, gripper and enclosure concept, sequence with manual fallback, a record per dose.
Acceptance
Mass against tolerance over repeated runs, rejects, bridging, spills, interventions and cleaning time against the manual method. Boundary: no toxic, potent, reactive or explosive dusts, no GMP dispensing.
Discuss a Chemicals or Materials Task

Feasibility and laboratory economics

Prove the gap before building a cell

A Chemicals and Materials Task Assessment measures today's method and compares the alternatives on the same basis before any cell is built. Utilisation decides most cases: with many materials in small lots, fixtures often beat a cell idle between changeovers.

01
Task brief
The task, current method and volumes, materials and their physical form, containers or specimens, instruments and permitted connections, room conditions and the area status your site has set.
02
Measured baseline
Today's full cost: technician minutes per acceptable sample, specimen or transfer, repeats, spills, changeover and handling exposure.
03
Option comparison
Each option on the same basis, adding equipment, enclosures, guarding, EHS review, validation, consumables, maintenance and training.
04
Trial plan and decision
An inert-material trial plan and risks. The report ends with go, change or stop, and points to a better scoop, container or the instrument maker's automation where that is cheaper.

Engineering packages

Seven packages with outputs you can inspect

Write the operating envelope first. Before any prototype, agree permitted materials by name and form, the largest quantity per operation, container types, wetted-part and seal compatibility, cleaning agents, temperature, humidity and enclosure airflow. Changing any of these voids earlier acceptance until your change process reviews it.

Safety, data, IP and site

Fit your site's controls, never replace them

Area status, permits, fault states and data terms are settled with your site before any trial begins.

  • Area status comes first

We ask for the area classification of every place the equipment will run, charge or be stored; trials proceed only where your site confirms in writing that the area is unclassified. A robot, charger or sensor can ignite a flammable atmosphere; classified-zone equipment needs certified protection and approvals this page does not offer.

  • Your permits stay in charge

Our equipment, documents and training feed your hazard-disclosure, permit, change-control and emergency arrangements. Tell us early if a change could affect a safety report or emergency plan; your review and any regulatory lead time come first. Contaminated equipment leaves site only with your decontamination record.

  • Design the safe state for each fault

For a mis-pick, tipped or leaking container, balance drift, overshoot, bridging, jammed specimen or unlabelled container, material stays contained and dosing stops. After power, air or communications loss, nothing resumes until an authorised person checks vessel and quantity state. Fume, odour, a gas alarm or any worker's concern stops the trial; clean-up follows your procedure and manual operation stays available.

  • Formulations, data and networks

Formulations, recipes, test results and plant layouts are your IP; agree confidentiality, access and storage before sharing any. The contract separates new project files from Nestack background tools and your know-how; no reuse of recipes or results, including model training, without written consent. Logs stay minimal and are returned or deleted at the end. No remote access or cloud service on plant networks without your IT and OT approval.

Ways to work together

  1. Chemicals and Materials Task Assessment

Define the task and materials, compare keeping, buying, adapting, integrating or building, and end with go, change or stop.

  2. Inert-material trial

One fixture, cell, aid or mount, trialled with inert surrogates in an area your site confirms is unclassified.

  3. Dedicated engineers

A bounded laboratory or plant-support package with deliverables and dates you set.

  4. Support after the trial

Agree who repairs, holds spares and may connect. Prototype support is not an on-call contract.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Showing 8 of 8 questions

  1. Bench and plant-support tasks in areas your site confirms are unclassified: dosing around an existing balance, preparing vials and samples, feeding specimens to a test machine you own, aids for moving and tipping containers of non-flammable materials, and sensor mounts for routine readings. Biological laboratory work sits on our Biotechnology page, GMP dispensing on Pharmaceuticals and production lines on Manufacturing. Classified areas and reactive chemistry are excluded.
