Robotics Engineering for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and QC Laboratories

Test the idea with placebo tablets, empty vials, dummy cartons and test codes before it reaches a GMP line.

Scroll

Tell us the dosage form, the step and what goes wrong today; no batch records or formulas are needed.

Try one engineering idea off the line first: a QC bench staging aid, a fixture that challenges code readers, a packaging-line interface or a pack-inspection camera trial. We test with placebo tablets, empty vials and dummy cartons against your written requirement, then give your quality, validation and engineering teams the drawings, code, records and limits to review, adopt or reject.

Who this page is for

What are you working on?

Qualification, validation, change control, line clearance and release stay with your licensed site; our work is evidence for those decisions.

Discuss a project for engineering and packaging managers

Four decisions, four owners

Did it meet the agreed measures? Does it enter change control? May it run on this line today? Better value than a vendor system?

A licensed plant must show that equipment and computerised systems are installed, operated and changed under control, with records. Trying a new guide or camera on a running GMP line costs change control and production time. A bench trial with inert material answers the engineering question first, so your quality unit reviews only ideas that have earned it.

Engineering acceptance
Did it meet the agreed measures with dummy material? Nestack and your engineering lead.
GMP adoption
Does it enter change control, qualification and validation? Your quality unit and validation owner.
Line release
May it run on this line today? Your production and QA.
Commercial
Better value than a vendor system or no change? Engineering and purchasing.

Illustrative scopes

Four off-line tasks, each with a boundary

These illustrative scopes are starting points for discussion, not completed Nestack client engagements.

Illustrative scope

QC-lab sample staging and weighing aid

Your challenge
Analysts move vials or tablets by hand between racks, a balance and an instrument tray.
Possible scope
One bench step beside existing instruments, tested with placebo tablets or empty vials; instrument software, methods and records untouched.
You receive
Aid, requirement trace, test report, cleaning notes, vendor comparison.
Acceptance
Placements, drops and breakage over agreed cycles; balance stability and identity checks unaffected. Boundary: no method suitability, IPC compliance or GMP use.

Feasibility and value

Compare every option with today's step

A Pharma Engineering Task Assessment records the step, formats, today's method, its error history and the decision owners. You receive a draft user requirement, a costed baseline, the options below, the documents your change control will expect, a test plan with stop criteria and a recommendation. Often the honest answer is to buy a qualified vendor system and use a fixture only to evaluate it.

01
Current method
Would a better rack, tray, label check or changeover sheet remove most of the error?
02
Buy
Does a qualified vendor system already do this, with its own documentation and support?
03
Adapt
Can the machine maker modify a guide, change part or reader mount under its own documentation?
04
Integrate
Would linking instruments or stations you already own close the gap?
05
Build
Which question can only a placebo-tested prototype or rig answer?
06
Value against your own baseline
Cost today's step in full: operator and changeover minutes, rework, investigations after misreads or mix-ups, and lost line time. Cost each option the same way, adding engineering, dummy packs, QA review, machine-maker time, qualification and change control, cleaning, spares and training; validation can exceed the prototype cost. Utilisation decides: how often the step runs, SKUs and formats sharing it, changeovers and batches a month. A fixture for a line that rarely changes seldom pays back.

Engineering packages

Seven packages your QA team can review

Links to a PLC, LIMS, MES, printer or serialisation system start read-only on a simulator or test network. A command path needs written approval from your engineering and quality owners, and we never alter an approved recipe, interlock or safety function. Prototype software can carry named access, change records, time-stamped raw results and no silent overwrite; these features do not stand in for your validation.

Safety, quality, data and IP

Your quality system leads every trial

Every trial follows your site's rules on access, gowning, permits and line clearance. Our records are inputs to your quality decisions; we never call a prototype approved for GMP or fit for batch use.

  • Machinery risk for powered rigs

Before anyone works beside a powered rig, we record a machinery risk assessment covering pinch, crush, shear and stored energy, and propose guarding and stops for your engineer to review. Any robot arm follows robot-cell references and its maker's instructions. A stop button is not guarding, and prototypes are not certified machinery.

  • Gated areas

Live GMP lines, real product, QC release testing and system validation. Sterile, aseptic and isolator work; biologicals and radiopharmaceuticals. Potent, hormonal, cytotoxic or sensitising products; narcotic, psychotropic and controlled substances. Production serialisation and regulatory or export reporting. Machine-control and safety-function changes; accept or reject decisions made by vision or AI.

  • Exceptions and recovery

An accepted misread, passed duplicate, dropped vial or pack left in the rig is logged as a failure, never silently retried. Faults must leave a recorded, recoverable state; restart needs an operator action, and any change of format, firmware or fixture is logged and retested. We agree beforehand who stops the rig, reconciles dummy material and authorises restart. On your premises your line-clearance and deviation procedures govern, and any unexpected event goes to your QA.

  • Data, networks and design rights

We use dummy batch numbers and test codes; no live serial numbers, batch records, formulas or patient information enter our systems. Drawings and artwork are shared under written confidentiality and deletion terms. Rigs stay off production networks unless your OT owner approves a segregated link. Ownership of new fixtures and code is agreed first, and your images train no other models without permission. DPDP duties commence in phases; we check each date in the Gazette before relying on it.

  1. Off-line engineering of four kinds: a staging or weighing aid for a QC bench, a fixture that challenges code readers and aggregation stations, an interface or changeover module for one point on a packaging line, and a sensor trial for pack inspection. Each is built and tested with placebo or dummy material.
