Robotics Engineering for Biotechnology Laboratories

Engineer the adapter, transfer, fixture or data link for one handoff.

Scroll

Tell us which step between your instruments is still manual; a plain description is enough to begin.

Most research labs already own automated instruments; the trouble sits between them. Plates are carried by hand, a tube rack does not match the deck library, or sample times are reconciled in a spreadsheet. Nestack engineers the adapter, transfer, fixture or data link for one handoff, proves it on the bench with inert substitutes and reports what still needs a person.

Who this page is for

What are you working on?

Biosafety approval, assay validity and regulated quality decisions remain with your scientists, biosafety committee and quality function. We supply engineering evidence for those decisions, not the decisions themselves.

Three decisions, three owners

Does it do its bounded job? May it be used with this material? Do results remain valid?

Instrument makers automate inside their own box, so a lab can own several walk-away instruments and still need someone to stand between them. Separate the engineering question from the biological one.

Engineering acceptance
Does the adapter, transfer or data link do its bounded job with the agreed labware, instruments and inert substitutes? Technical owners on both sides.
Biological and biosafety release
May it be used with this material, in this room, under these procedures? Your principal investigator, biosafety officer and biosafety committee.
Scientific and commercial decision
Do results remain valid, and does the full cost beat the current manual step? Your scientists and budget holder.
Where this page stops
Hospital and clinical diagnostic laboratories sit on the Healthcare robotics page; GMP manufacturing, qualification, batch release, fill-finish and packaging on the Pharmaceuticals robotics page; regulated diagnostic instruments on the Medical Devices page; and biotechnology software on the Biotechnology software page.

The fix is often a better nest, a matched labware definition or a permitted interface, not a full workcell.

Illustrative scope

Incubator-to-liquid-handler plate transfer

Your challenge
Plates are carried by hand between an automated incubator's transfer station and a liquid-handler deck daily, breaking walk-away runs.
Possible scope
One plate type and lid state, the incubator's existing handoff point, one deck position and your arm, mover or a simple guided transfer; no instrument modification without written permission.
You receive
Nest prototype, position definitions, transfer sequence and test log.
Acceptance
Transfers over agreed repeated cycles; mis-seats, lid displacement, collisions, spills from water-filled plates, recovery time per fault and time the incubator gate stays open. Boundary: no claim on cell viability or contamination.

Feasibility and lab economics

Find the smallest change that removes the manual step

A Lab Interface Feasibility Assessment maps today's handoff: who does it, how often, what goes wrong, and which instruments, versions, labware, interfaces and service terms are involved. You receive a step map, baseline, option comparison, bench trial plan, risk list and a clear next step. If a better nest, vendor option or procedure suffices, that is the recommendation.

01
Improve the manual step
Would a guide, rack, label or schedule change remove the problem?
02
Buy the vendor's option
Does the instrument maker offer a transfer station, stacker or integration package that fits?
03
Adapt open tools
Can an open-source driver or published labware definition carry the function after version and licence checks?
04
Integrate
Is the gap an adapter, connector or sequence between instruments you already own?
05
Build
What uncertainty can only a bench prototype resolve?
06
Price the whole step, not the part
Set the baseline as hands-on minutes per run, repeated runs, idle instrument time and overnight work that cannot happen, then add design, scientist time in trials, vendor visits, consumables, re-teaching, cleaning, spares, software upkeep and cross-skilled people. A weekly step seldom justifies a mechanism; a nightly bottleneck may.

Lab packages

Seven lab packages with outputs you can check

Handling parts reference standard microplate dimensions, then get checked against your actual plates, lids, skirts, seals, tubes and racks across lots; an adapter and its software definition are designed and tested together. Every connector starts in simulation or on a disconnected bench, then runs on the agreed instrument, firmware and software version under your staff's supervision.

Safety, data, IP and site

Keep biology, people, data and designs in the right hands

Agree who handles material, who reviews containment, where data is kept and who owns new designs before anything is tested.

  • Inert substitutes by default

Our prototypes are built and tested with water, dyes, buffers and empty labware in a non-containment space. Nestack staff do not handle live cultures, recombinant or hazardous material, or human samples. Any use with biological material happens only under your institution's approvals, with your staff handling the material.

  • Containment and equipment are gated

A device in a BSL-2 or BSL-3 area or a biosafety cabinet can affect airflow, decontamination and facility certification, so it needs your biosafety officer's review first. Modifying a vendor instrument, its firmware or safety interlocks needs the maker's and owner's written agreement. Exposed parts are specified for the cleaning agents you name.

  • Rehearse what stops a run

Test dropped and tilted plates, lid loss, tube jams, misread barcodes, instrument timeouts, power loss and network loss. Each must stop in a defined, recoverable state; returning power or connection must not restart motion or dispensing. Agree who pauses the scheduler, clears a stuck plate or spill under your procedures and authorises restart.

  • Lab data and confidentiality

Protocols, strain and construct details, assay parameters and instrument data stay confidential. Capture is read-only by default, stored where you decide and limited to what the integration needs; please pseudonymise or withhold donor and patient identities before sharing anything. Network access is agreed with your IT team first.

  • Designs and code

Separate new fixtures, adapters, definitions and code from your background IP and vendor software licences, and the contract lists which editable files you receive and any reuse rights. Nothing is reused or used for model training without written permission.
