Waste, recycling and monitoringBench rigs and supervised trialsRobotics engineering

Robotics Engineering for Environment & Sustainability

Test the sorting, sampling or bench step before you buy the line.

Scroll

Name the material or sampling point and the step you want to change, and describe the current routine; no permits or site data are needed to start.

Bring one step from your recycling floor, dismantling bench or monitoring programme. Nestack engineers a bounded sensing mount, gripper cell, fixture, sampler interface or test rig, proves it on your own material away from the running line, then joins a supervised trial under your isolation rules. Results are weighed or laboratory-checked against your current method, misses included.

Who this page is for

What are you working on?

Mixed, wet and seasonal material sets the terms. Start from the stream, not the robot.

Discuss a project for recyclers and urban local bodies

Who decides what

Did it do its bounded job? Who isolates, clears and restarts? Do results agree with your reference? Revise, buy, adapt, pilot or stop?

Dry recyclables arrive with food residue, films, labels and moisture, and the mix shifts with the monsoon, festivals and collection contracts. Many sites gain more from upstream segregation or a fixture than from a robot, and we say so. Your registration and site rules stay yours.

Engineering result
Did the cell, rig or interface do its bounded job? Your engineering lead with our technical lead.
Site and isolation
Who isolates, clears and restarts? Your plant manager and competent persons.
Reference value
Do weighed fractions or readings agree with your audit or laboratory? Your quality lead.
Commercial decision
Revise, buy, adapt, pilot or stop? Your budget holder.

Where this page stops: power plants, substations and solar-module cleaning sit with Energy & Utilities, while sampling at a water treatment works stays here; crops, soil and greenhouses with Agriculture, where compost test rigs stay here and agronomy does not; plant chemistry and chemical handling with Chemicals & Materials, and metal recovery by leaching or smelting is not offered on either page; board and device production with Electronics, while end-of-life dismantling stays here; building sites and products with Construction, where demolition is gated; extraction and mine water with Mining; production cells with Manufacturing; collection apps and dashboards with Nestack's existing software services.

Illustrative scope

Conveyor-side dry-recyclables sensing and pick-trial cell

Your challenge
Can a camera and a pick or air-jet step recover one fraction, such as PET bottles, from your belt?
Possible scope
Sensor mount over a slowed section, labelled capture of the real stream, and a guarded off-line pick cell fed with sampled material.
You receive
Mount, labelled images, test cell, failure log by cause, build or buy view.
Acceptance
Weighed purity and recovery over repeat batches against a manual-sort audit, picks per minute, stoppages and suction-cup wear. Boundary: no line rate or multi-shift duty.

Feasibility and stream economics

Price the current belt before pricing a robot

We sample and describe the stream or sampling point: material, moisture, contamination, belt speed, equipment already installed, and the reference your team trusts, a sort audit or a laboratory result. The report costs today's method, sets each option side by side, lays out trial stages with named owners and the conditions that would halt them, lists open risks and ends with a plain recommendation. If a commercial sorter answers the need, it says so. A cell that only copes with dry batches may idle through the monsoon; results are stated as cost per tonne of target fraction at agreed purity, or per valid sample.

01
Current method
Would segregation, a cleaner transfer or a better picking station remove the bottleneck?
02
Buy
Does a supported optical sorter, robotic sorter or analyser suit your material?
03
Adapt or integrate
Can a gripper, chute or mount be changed with the supplier's agreement? Is the gap a sensor mount or sampler interface on equipment you own?
04
Build
What can only a bounded new cell, fixture or rig answer?

Engineering packages

Seven packages with outputs your team can check

A detection is not a pick. Labelling bottles in recorded images is not lifting one off a moving belt. We report detection, grasp and weighed recovery separately, because crushed, wet and tangled items tend to fail at the gripper, not the camera.

Isolation, hazards, samples and images

Starter packages leave conveyor controls and guarding unchanged; any emergency-stop link is designed and verified by your competent person. Trial equipment stays off your network.

  • A robot stop is not isolation

Your lock-off and permit system governs every intervention near conveyors and balers. For our rigs we assess pinch and entanglement points, pneumatic and vacuum stored energy, dust, noise and ignition from the material handled, and agree guarding with your competent person.

  • What ends a run

A run stops, and its results are set aside, if feedstock changes beyond the trial definition, if anyone touches the live line outside your isolation procedure, or if a battery, aerosol, sharp or medical item reaches the cell. Smoke, unrecorded fouling, a broken sample chain or an unannounced software change also ends it.

  • Recovery follows your procedure

Agree who stops the trial, applies lock-out, releases stored pneumatic energy, clears jams and authorises restart. Supervision is a condition of the trial, not a substitute for guarding. We rehearse recovery on the bench first.

  • Outside the starter offer

Sewer, septic-tank, wet-well, digester and tank work, and other confined spaces. Work on live balers, shredders, trommels, compactors or running conveyors. Open water, rivers and effluent channels; drones; landfill and dumpsites.

  • Also outside the starter offer

Hazardous, biomedical and sharps-bearing waste; battery, CRT, lamp and refrigerant processing. RDF, plastic stockpiles, aerosols and other fire-prone material. Compliance-grade or legal sampling and regulatory monitoring systems.

  • Samples and custody

Sample identity, preservation and custody follow your laboratory's procedures; a carrier can trigger a sampler but does not make results compliance-grade.

  • Images and devices

Belt cameras can capture workers and personal papers, so we minimise and mask. Data-bearing devices follow the recycler's data-destruction process. Your imagery and trained models are not reused for others without written agreement.

What evidence looks like

Dated records of real runs, failures and recovery time; no vendor footage or generated images.

Ways to work together

  1. Environment and Sustainability Feasibility Assessment

Describe the stream or sampling point, cost today's method, set each option side by side and end with a plain recommendation.

  2. Bench and supervised trial

One cell, fixture, sampler or carrier, proved on your own material away from the running line, then a supervised trial under your isolation rules.

  3. Dedicated engineers

Engineers for one belt, bench or sampling package, with deliverables and review dates fixed first.

  4. Support after the trial

Agree who fixes faults and holds spares. A prototype carries no maintenance contract.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Showing 8 of 8 questions

  1. Four kinds of bounded work: a sensing and pick trial for one fraction from a dry-recyclables belt, a fixture for non-hazardous parts at an e-waste bench, a sampler interface for a water platform you already operate, and an air-sensor carrier checked beside a reference monitor. Each starts on a bench. Power plants sit on our Energy & Utilities page, crops on Agriculture.
