Robotics Engineering for Mining and Mineral Laboratories

Start with the sample, component or conveyor.

Scroll

Tell us the sample, component or conveyor section and what makes the step slow, dusty or hard to repeat.

Engineer one bounded task at a mine's surface or in its laboratory: a transfer cell between the pulverisers, balances and XRF or fusion stations your assay lab already runs, a sensor payload for conveyor idler inspection on a route your mine has approved, a workshop fixture for idler or liner change-out, or a bench rig that ranks wear materials. We prove it off-site first, then trial it under your mine's risk assessment, permits and codes of practice.

Who this page is for

What are you working on?

Where this page stops: processing chemistry and non-mine labs sit with Chemicals & Materials, while mine assay labs stay here; power generation and captive power with Energy & Utilities; building and civil works with Construction, while quarrying and extraction come here; waste, monitoring and water treatment with Environment & Sustainability; factory cells with Manufacturing; predictive-maintenance software with our Mining industry page. Mine electrical systems and mine water come here but are gated.

Discuss a project for assay and sample-preparation labs

A mine site is regulated, even at the surface

Has it met its agreed measures? May it run under the mine's permit? Is the sample or data good enough? Is the whole cost lower?

In India the legal definition of a mine reaches surface workshops and premises where mineral is prepared for sale, so a preparation plant or conveyor workshop is normally inside the mine's statutory system. The owner, agent and manager, the competent persons and DGMS requirements decide what may be trialled. We design to those decisions; we do not make them.

Engineering acceptance
Has the cell, payload, fixture or rig met its agreed measures? Nestack and your technical lead.
Site release
May it run in this lab, workshop or route under the mine's permit and code of practice? Mine manager and competent persons.
Analytical acceptance
Are sample integrity, data or ranking good enough? Lab manager or reliability lead.
Commercial decision
Is that achieved at lower whole cost? Lab manager, reliability lead and buyer.

Sampling protocols, grade decisions, statutory roles and approvals stay with the people who hold them.

Illustrative scopes

Four surface tasks, each with a stated boundary

Each scope starts on our bench. These are illustrative scopes, not completed client engagements.

Illustrative scope

Sample-preparation transfer cell

Your challenge
Pots, crucibles, beads or vials move by hand between existing pulverisers, balances and XRF or fusion stations, with dust and transcription risk.
Possible scope
One transfer step for one container family, bench first, then a lab trial; instruments and methods unchanged.
You receive
Gripper, layout, sample-ID hand-off record, stop concept, cleaning procedure, buy-option comparison.
Acceptance
Transfers over an agreed run count; ID mismatches (target zero); spills and mass loss; blank and reference-material checks set by the lab; cycle time with cleaning. Boundary: no claim on assay accuracy, accreditation or chain of custody.

Feasibility and value

Find the smallest change that beats today's method

A Mine Lab and Surface Task Assessment delivers a specification, a costed baseline, an option comparison, the limits your permit system sets on a trial, a go and stop test plan and a recommendation. If a better rack, a handheld recorder or a commercial line wins, it says so.

01
Task and envelope
The task, its location, the dust, moisture and abrasion envelope, today's method and who owns sampling, maintenance and safety decisions.
02
Full baseline
Today's method costed in full: technician time per sample or idler section, re-preparation, dust exposure, walk-by hours, change-out crew hours and unplanned stoppage.
03
Option comparison
Each option costed the same way, adding integration, reference runs, dust control, spares, training, induction and upkeep. Utilisation decides: sample volume across shifts and drilling campaigns, conveyor length and inspection frequency.
04
Trial metric and plan
Cost per correctly prepared sample, per idler section with usable data, per change-out or per valid wear test, including rework, measured against a go and stop test plan within your permit limits.

Engineering packages

Seven packages a mine engineer can review

Links to conveyor controls, PLC or SCADA, LIMS or balances start read-only. A command path needs the mine engineer's written approval, and nothing bypasses an interlock, pull-wire or guard. Some mining equipment must be of an approved type; that route belongs to a manufacturer with test-house reports and a field trial at a consenting mine, and we document such concepts for one rather than prototype them.

Safety, data, IP and site

Inside the mine's rules, with data protected

Every trial runs under the mine's own risk assessment, permits and codes of practice, with its competent persons deciding what is allowed.

  • The mine's system leads

Stand-off, guarding, isolation and access windows are agreed with the mine; no carrier enters guarding or rides a running belt.

  • Machinery risk for cells, fixtures and rigs

For any powered cell, jig or rig we assess crushing, shearing, entanglement, stored energy, falling loads and dust, and propose guarding and isolation for the mine engineer to review. A stop button is not guarding, and automation never replaces lockout. Prototypes are not certified machinery.

  • What ends a run

A dust-fouled sensor, lost position, wheel slip on spillage, a jammed pot or an unexpected conveyor start must end in a defined stopped state; restoring power must not restart motion. Contact with a person, a near miss, a mislabelled sample or interference with mine machinery stops the trial for the mine to investigate.

  • How it recovers

Agree who stops the cell, clears a jam or spill, quarantines and re-prepares affected samples, retrieves a stalled payload and authorises restart. Supervision is an operating condition, not a safeguard.

  • Gated, not offered

Underground; explosive atmospheres and flameproof apparatus. Explosives and blasting; autonomous haulage and heavy earth-moving machinery. DGMS approved-type equipment; mine electrical systems; winding, haulage and conveyor controls. Mine water and tailings systems. This work needs approved equipment and qualified specialists; passing a concept to a manufacturer for approval is a written transfer of design responsibility.

  • Change means retest

A new location, route, sample type, sensor, firmware or machine interface needs reassessment. If a device proves to be an approved type, or is wanted belowground, the prototype route ends.

  • Data, devices and design rights

Assay results, grade data and mine plans can be market-sensitive. Where data lives, who reads it and when it is deleted are settled before any transfer; imagery avoids workers. Devices on mine OT networks are approved, logged and removed. New designs stay separate from background IP; mine data is not used for model training without written permission. We plan for DPDP obligations as they commence and confirm dates against the Gazette.

Proof and records

A clean recording is not a diagnosis, a transfer is not assay accuracy and a ranking is not service life; one plant says nothing about another

Ways to work together

  1. Mine Lab and Surface Task Assessment

Define the task and its envelope, cost today's method in full and compare the options within the limits your permit system sets.

  2. Bench and site trial

One cell, payload, fixture or rig, proved off-site first, then trialled under your mine's risk assessment, permits and codes of practice.

  3. Dedicated engineers

Engineers for one lab, workshop or rig package, fitted to where it runs and the shifts it must fit.

  4. Support after the trial

We agree who repairs, calibrates and holds spares. No remote-site response times are offered.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Showing 8 of 8 questions

  1. Four kinds of surface and laboratory work: a transfer cell around instruments your assay lab already uses, a sensor payload for conveyor inspection on a route your mine has approved, a workshop fixture for idler or liner change-out, and a wear-part bench rig. Each starts on our bench. Processing chemistry sits on Chemicals & Materials, power on Energy & Utilities, civil works on Construction and environmental systems on Environment & Sustainability.
