Lift 4.0.0 (17 May 2026) Ships with Full Scala 3 Support — Running Lift on Scala 3.10, Scala 3.3 LTS and 2.13

Lift 4.0.0 was released on 17 May 2026, with artefacts for Scala 3 and Scala 2.13 published to Maven Central the same day. It closes a milestone series that began with 4.0.0-M1 in September 2024 and ran through M3 (25 November 2025, the first cross-built milestone), M4 (8 February 2026), M5 (18 March 2026) and RC1 (29 March 2026). The committers describe the goal as a slimmer framework that is maintainable for the long term. Status: active, small team, infrequent releases.

What changed in Lift 4

  • Full Scala 3 support for all core Lift components, with the test suite passing on both Scala 2.13 and Scala 3.
  • lift-json has been removed; Lift now standardises on json4s.
  • The persistence modules (Mapper, Record and related) have been removed.
  • Jetty 11 support, a Java 11 minimum, and removal of many deprecation warnings and unneeded dependencies.
  • Internal use of scala-xml private APIs was replaced with public ones, unblocking future dependency upgrades.

The Scala platform in late 2026

  • Scala 3.10.0 was released on 12 October 2026, with 3.10.1-RC1 following on 25 October.
  • Scala 3.9.0, released on 3 September 2026, opened a new long-term-support line; the previous 3.3 LTS line, which Lift 4 builds against and which stays maintained for a year after 3.9.0, received 3.3.9 on 28 October 2026.
  • Scala 2.13.18 was released on 17 November 2025 and remains the line for teams not yet on Scala 3.

Support window for older Lift versions

Lift's support document, updated 20 August 2025, gives each release bug fixes for 18 months and gives the last minor of the previous major six months of security fixes after a new major ships. On that policy Lift 3.4 (October 2019) left security support when 4.0.0 shipped, and Lift 3.5 (October 2021), the last 3.x minor, is security-only, with the window closing around mid-November 2026. After the 4.0.0 release the repository moved to 4.1.0-SNAPSHOT; only documentation commits have followed, and no 4.1 timeline has been published.

Why this matters: Lift 3.x applications now have a supported destination on Scala 3, but moving there means replacing lift-json and any Mapper or Record persistence code.
